Austin Rivers Slams JJ Redick for Doc Rivers Comments

During a segment of ESPN’s First Take, former LA Clippers guard JJ Redick criticized Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers, accusing him of making excuses and lacking accountability. Redick asserted that Rivers always finds reasons for shortcomings and tends to throw his team under the bus rather than taking responsibility.

In response to Redick’s comments, Austin Rivers, Doc Rivers’ son and former teammate of Redick with the Clippers, defended his father during an NBA Today segment. Austin pointed out that despite accusations of lack of accountability, Doc Rivers has consistently been held responsible for team outcomes. He highlighted instances where his father was fired, such as after the Clippers blew a 3-1 lead in the bubble against the Denver Nuggets, and after losing to the favored Celtics in the playoffs.

Austin also took aim at Redick, emphasizing that Redick’s best years in the NBA were under Doc Rivers with the Clippers. He mentioned defensive shortcomings and limitations in Redick’s offensive game, suggesting that Redick’s success was due in part to the system tailored around his shooting abilities.

While expressing respect for Redick, Austin questioned the sincerity of his criticism towards Doc Rivers, given the success Redick experienced under his coaching. He characterized Redick’s remarks as ironic and questioned whether there was underlying tension between Redick and Doc Rivers. Ultimately, Austin challenged Redick’s perspective and defended his father’s coaching record.
